As we begin the new year, I'd like to take the opportunity to reflect on the recent progress that has been made to meet the state's deadline to discontinue water diversions from the Carmel River.
After examining 11 potential alternatives to the original Regional Desalination Project since January 2012, we filed an application in April for the Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project. The current project is comprised of three elements: Groundwater reuse (water recycling), aquifer storage and recovery (ASR), and desalination. These elements, successfully implemented, will allow us to reduce the size of the desalination plant and diversify our sources of water.
